Understanding the Root Cause of Cedar Roof Failure
A homeowner in Woodbury, Connecticut, contacted us to address a failing red cedar roof. Upon inspection, our team discovered that the original roof had been improperly installed by the home builder, leading to premature failure, and multiple leak points where water was entering the property. The shingles showed signs of early failure in the form of extreme cupping, lifting and failed multiple brittleness tests.
The existing cedar shingles were installed on purlins ( spaced planks designed to allow the wood roof to breathe and dry evenly ) with a 6" on-center spacing and a 5" exposure. This mismatched configuration resulted in insufficient and inconsistent nail penetration, nails frequently missing impact with the purlins , and compromising the roof's structural integrity and performance.
Selecting the Ideal Cedar Shingle
After careful consideration the homeowner selected Alaskan Yellow Cedar shingles for the replacement roof. Known for their durability and natural beauty, these shingles offer great performance and longevity. To ensure optimal quality, we consulted with the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau and Canadian Cedar Mills, selecting a CCA-treated 24" "Royal" Cut Shingle from Waldun Forest Products. The longer exposure of 6" provided by the 24" shingles allowed for a more secure installation, while the CCA treatment added an extra layer of protection against moisture and decay.
Enhancements for Durability and Aesthetics
To further enhance the roof's performance and appearance, we incorporated several additional features:
- Copper Flashing: The chimneys were flashed with copper.
- Copper Valleys: Durable and watertight copper valleys were installed in a custom bent “W” shape at roof intersections to prevent leaks and add a touch of elegance.
- Custom Copper Valley Pan: A custom-designed and welded copper valley pan was added to provide extra protection in areas prone to moisture damage.
- Drexel Standing Seam Metal Accents and Yellow Sidewall Cedar on Gable Peaks: These elements were incorporated into the gable ends and accent slopes to create a visually striking and cohesive design.
- Skylights: Three New VELUX Skylights were installed to improve natural lighting inside the property.
